What is a Hormone?

We hear this word repeatedly and we’re told that they are the cause of so much imbalance in our bodies. We non-medical people take that at face value. If we dig just a little deeper so we can understand our bodies better, we find that hormones are incredibly complex and necessary for our bodies to function at all, let alone to function optimally.

Hormones are part of the endocrine system. Essentially, hormones are substances created by the body that regulate a copious number of bodily functions. Their job is to regulate our bodies so they remain in a state of homeostasis, or correct balance, so that we can experience the best health possible.

What Do Hormones Do?

Hormones regulate a significant number of functions throughout our bodies. For example, they help:

  • Modulate blood pressure
  • Affect growth
  • Impact mood and mental well-being
  • Affect the creation of red blood cells
  • Send messages related to gender and sex hormones

Usually when we think of hormones, we think of them in terms of their relationship to fertility (for women) and virility (for men).  Imbalances in gender/sex-related hormones often induce someone to seek treatment. Many of the symptoms of a decrease in sex-related hormones are related to aging. For women, that process is called menopause and in men the process is called andropause.

Symptoms and Treatment

Ironically, for both men and women, some symptoms of andropause and menopause overlap:

  • Irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Weight gain
  • Depression
  • Loss of libido

Women may experience changes in their skin and additional hair growth. Men may experience erectile dysfunction and hair loss. Fortunately, we live in a time when treatment is available. In addition to  exercise, good nutrition, and stress management, a highly effective treatment option is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT).

What are Bioidentical Hormones?

Bioidentical hormones are identical to those produced by the body. They are created scientifically, which enables an identical level of molecular replication. In other words, bioidentical hormones replicate specific hormones exactly. Traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) uses synthetic hormones, which aren’t identical to those produced by the body, making them much more difficult to regulate.

Bioidentical hormones are available in several formats:

  • Creams
  • Gels
  • Pills
  • Pellets

Advantages of Bioidentical Hormones

Bioidentical hormones have several advantages over traditional HRT:

  • They are very effective in treating the symptoms of hormonal imbalance
  • They mimic natural hormone levels in the body
  • They are more easily absorbed than traditional HRT
  • They have fewer side effects than synthetic hormones
  • Bioidentical hormones can be customized to each individual’s needs
